“Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle : A Key Defence Against Dementia Risk”

Being happy never goes out of style. Impact of dementia can have a significant impact on person’s well being and happiness. Emotional support plays a crucial role in maintaining the happiness and well being of individuals living with dementia. A person centred care approach recognises the individuality and unique needs of people with dementia. Understanding and addressing the emotional well-being by tailoring care to their preservances and abilities. This approach emphasizes maintaining a sense of Identity dignity and autonomy, which can positively impact the emotional state and overall happiness of people living with dementia. Playful and imaginative nature of how person’s living with dementia engage with dance and demonstrate how this has the potential to challenge the stigma associated with dementia and support social inclusion. This underscores the urgent need to make dance programs such as Sharing Dance Seniors more widely accessible to persons living with dementia everywhere. Activities such as going outdoors and performing household tasks can help them live well with their condition, reduce their symptoms, and even slow the progression of dementia. Providing engaging and fun activities can offer stimulation, help fight boredom, and bring pleasure to the lives of people with dementia. There is no cure for dementia. Planning and performing meaningful activities with a person with dementia can help them maintain their residual skills and can be source of enjoyment. Something like stroking and massaging their hands can be very comforting for them. My experience of such behavior with my mom i have seen remarkable difference in quality of her life. Being with her, even just sitting beside or being fully present, and responding to anything she does is more than enough and i see her adapting to change for her own good. With great effort she has recovered from brain stroke and she was diagnosed dementia two years back. With bach flower remedy, exercise, balance nutrition we see her recover to her normal self in one year’s of time. Its very important we can spend time with them and give them unconditional love as they only require your quality present time. Organizing a day has been good way to help mom stay active. People with dementia can still take part in sports and leisure activities. Aside from being beneficial to a person’s physical and mental well-being, group exercise classes can be great for socializing, too. One can engage in dementia-friendly yoga, tai chi, swimming, walking, or gym sessions with personal trainer or fishing, drumming or gardening. Creative activities such as crafting can be fun and relaxing outlets for people with dementia. It’s important to focus less on the finished product and more on the joy of the activity itself. My mom in two years started colouring Mandalas and it has proved a very beautiful healing exercise for her. In coming month this year we will be exhibiting her work. She is so excited to know her work is going to be on display. Participating in appropriate and meaningful activities can help a person with dementia achieve a better quality of life. Even something like going to a park, getting dressed or applying a lipstick or a nail paint is very rejuvenating. Everytime i go out with my mother to see a play or our weekly cafe dates she looks forward to meet new people and becos her smile is so infectious she ends up getting clicked with people. The smile she has on her face when we go to different parks is something that melts my heart. No matter how tired i might be i end up walking with her in the park. The slow pace makes me realise the importance of my time with her. Time walking with her brings me to her reality and i understand i have to go with fkow of life. Getting out in nature is good for your health — not just in terms of dementia and Parkinson’s, but many different health endpoints. Nature reduces stress and spending time in nature everyday has been linked to several health benefits. This is just a start, but these strategies go a long way by giving your brain a chance to heal, recover, and experience fewer memory problems. Today i see my mother in a healthy safe space and it fills my heart with hope that there is scope to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementia if we can be mindful of our life style in present times. The relationship of lifestyle and health should be highly considered as it has a significant influence on physical and mental health of human being.
